The Amazing Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil

coconut_oilThere are so many really great benefits derived from coconut oil that it’s almost unbelievable when you read the seemingly never-ending list.

As far as a yeast infection or a Candida infestation is concerned, coconut oil will act as a strong antifungal, but more importantly, it will increase your immunity and it will promote proper digestion which always seems to be a problem with a Candida overgrowth. In addition, it promotes stress relief, maintains cholesterol levels and metabolism, and relieves various health issues such as kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cancer.

All of coconut oil benefits are attributed to the fatty acids in the oil; namely, capyrlic acid, lauric acid and capric acid, as well as properties such as antifungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial and antioxidant. Both coconuts and avocados fall into the category of positive, high-fat foods which are beneficial for human health.

Coconut oil contains three different fatty acids. One of the acids is called lauric acid, and this is the oil touted as being the real “miracle” ingredient in coconut oil. Fortunately, lauric acid makes up 50% of the total fatty acids in the oil. Just like the other two fatty acids in coconut oil, lauric acid is actually a “healthy” saturated fatty acid and is found in the milk of mothers. Based on calculations concerning the amount of lauric acid found in human breast milk, a beneficial amount lauric acid is around 24 grams of lauric acid for an average-size adult in one day. This amount is found in about 3 1/2 tablespoons.

Being more than just a practical food, coconut oil is actually recognized by the medical community as being useful against various immune diseases. More than a few studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of coconut oil, and research is continually being conducted on the nutritional value of pure coconut oil. Reference for this research is found in the book, “The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil” written by Dr. Bruce Fife, ND.

When you’re attempting to rebuild your immune system which will include reestablishing the beneficial flora in the intestines, coconut oil helps to restore the environment of the intestines for the bacteria you’re trying to reestablish.

Coconut oil prevents the damage of tooth enamel by the “strep” bacteria and also strengthens our bones.

One benefit of coconut oil is that you can take it internally, or you can rub it into your skin, but rubbing it into your skin has multiple benefits. The traditional way of taking a supplement, of course, is mouth, either in a liquid form, a capsule, or pill form. However, it’s well known that this form of obtaining a needed supplement does not allow for 100% of the supplement to be absorbed into the bloodstream. This also causes less potency of the supplement because of stomach enzymes and acids interfering with the absorption. On the other hand, when we rub a liquid supplement into the skin, a larger percentage of the potent ingredients are able to inter directly into the bloodstream than when a supplement is taken by mouth and therefore forced to travel the entire length of the digestive system. This form of administering a supplement or medication by applying it to the skin is called the transdermal method. The method is often used in order to prevent bothersome and even dangerous side effects such as an upset stomach, rashes, or other more bothersome effects.

An additional advantage of applying coconut oil to the skin for the purpose of a quicker and a more positive absorption into the bloodstream is that it will form a barrier which will protect the skin from the lactic acid bacteria which are responsible for causing skin infections. It can also help with the itching of dermatitis problems such as eczema and psoriasis, and makes it easier for the skin to retain its natural chemical balance. This is turn can aid in preventing age spots, sagging skin, dryness of the skin, and wrinkles. Coconut oil can also act as a sun blocker protecting the skin from the dangerous ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Many years ago it was believed that coconut oil, being saturated oil, was capable of raising cholesterol levels, so of course patients with high or potentially high cholesterol levels were instructed to never eat coconuts and not to obtain the oil. However, today, most members of the medical profession are aware of the proven benefits of coconut oil when it comes to cholesterol levels. According to one study, this one conducted by K.G. Nevin and T. Rajamohan of Department of Biochemistry, University of Kerala, Kariavattom, and published by Elsevier  in volume 37, September, 2004; “VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) has a beneficial effect in lowering lipid components compared to CO (coconut oil). It reduced total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, LDL, and VLDL cholesterol levels and increased HDL cholesterol in serum and tissues.”

Virgin coconut oil will actually add a beneficial environment to the intestines which will aid the survival of lactic acid bacteria, otherwise known as the “good” bacteria which are needed by every human being. On the other hand, coconut oil works hard to destroy pathogens in the body such as H. pylori, yeast, and Candida albicans. Whether you suffer from ongoing mild yeast infections or a Candida albicans infestation, I would definitely recommend that you take plenty of virgin coconut oil every day. A healthy person needs only around three tablespoons of VCO a day, whereas a women suffering from a Candida overgrowth can normally take up to five or six tablespoons a day, depending on her size, and a man with the same problems can take six tablespoons a day.

If you purchase coconut oil, you should try to purchase ‘virgin’ coconut oil; in addition, organic would also be preferable to non-organic.

In my opinion, some of the brands which I’ve used and trust are Garden of Life’s Living Foods Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil, Spectrum Organic Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil, and of course Probacto’s Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.
